A major European ISP link its network to FON’s 32 000 hotspots

FON with +32 000 hotspots

FON, a venture which allows users to get free wifi access with all the FON-enabled wifi spots in exchange for yourself opening up your wifi access, has signed with France-based Neuf Cegetel. What does this mean concretely for you?? If you sign up with Neuf Cegetel for a regular internet broadband connection, it'll mean much more: it'll mean unlimited phone calls from your wifi network on your hybrid wifi/gsm phone AND the same from all Neuf Cegetel subscribers AND from all FON-enabled wifi spots (32000). Not bad... and of course, crickee texting in all those places absolutely free and fast.

Cool.

Any Free phone?

Alright, Free means freedom or free stuff, but in France it means also a bold, innovative broadband provider... Which is now jumping into the Wifi and hybrid mobile phones, for the enjoyment of its customers. It should arrive in the coming weeks, and if anyone has a hold on those new phones, we'd be glad at Crickee to get to see and test the thing... For unlimited texting, of course!

The wonderful Nokia N91 is coming soon … at last !

Nokia n91_crickee

Nokia's new flagship phone, the N91, which was supposed to hit stores in December 2005 is coming soon.

It had already been postponed for Digital Rights Management issues, along with other models. Now the reason is issues concerning its operating system development. Nokia noticed these issues at the last minute. Nevertheless, this phone's production is on the way and it should be available in the coming weeks.

This baby has a Wifi card in addition to supporting the GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS networks. How convenient to use software like Skype and Crickee for free calls and SMSs !

It is also marketed as a musicphone with music keys, pretty good to play MP3 files (and others like MP3, AAC, Real, WAV, WMA...)

This impressive phone remains pretty compact and light with a weight of 156 grams. It has a Symbian S60 OS, a 2 Megapixel camera and ... a 4Go hard disk along with 30 MB internal memory. Needless to say, it's enough to store many crickee messages if you adopt a crickee with your N91!

Lengthy bargaining with a 9 year old

I have hust weaseled my way out of buying Justin a mobile phone, but at a cost!!

Justin has been plaguing me for some time now with his pressing desire to adopt a little Crickee. In his mind I would provide the little home for Crickee : aka a Crickee compatible mobile phone. It cost me a V3 Tamagotchi and the promise that he would get a home for Crickee either for his 11th birthday or when the French market has a phone that meets both his and my requirements (of course we each have different agendas).

His reply was instant :" why can't you get Disney to make a special phone that could adopt Crickee and that I could use to call you and Daddy with?" Agreed, there is nothing particularly groundbreaking in his request and we are talking about a niche market, but I can't tell you how useful it would be!!

Justin's really putting the pressure on now he knows that his Tamagotchi can migrate into a mobile phone..even though this virtual pet doesn't know how to SMS with his peers yet!.

Mobile advertising from USD255M in 2005 to USD1b in 2009

Visiongain
Originally uploaded by crickee.
According to a study released in March by Visiongain, mobile advertising is already here and fast growing, as 2005's revenues are already over 250 Million dollars in Europe and US only.

This study shows that we are at the very beginning of the Mobile Advertising revolution, and seems to announce that the shape, the quality of Mobile advertising will differ from what we know on the more traditional medias. We should all gain from this in term of the usefulness of advertising (relevancy, timeliness, etc) and cost of communications (paid by Ads rather that users' money!).

Crickee is definitely looking to not only make you text free, but help you grab nice opportunities, direct from your mobile... announcements soon on this! more

Connection settings: the Sony-Ericsson P900 example

Sony-ericsson P900_crickee
Originally uploaded by crickee.

The Sony-Ericsson P900 is certainly a good smartphone but to be able to surf the web with it and download applications like Crickee, you still need to have your data connection set up or you're going nowhere...

Sometimes your phone is ready to browse wap/websites because your operator did the job for you, this is the case for most phones sold in packs.

Ok, but what happens in the worst case scenario, which is my phone?
I bought it in France in an Orange pack and since then I switched to Bouygues Telecom.

The thing is my P900 has the Orange connection settings ... but that's not very helpful right ? My phone and SIM card don't give a damn about this!

So I did try to call the support center (at 0 825 825 614) but they wouldn't help me unless I call them with another phone. The settings are supposed to be too complex for me to handle this without typing them on my P900 while on the phone with the support center.

Since I had no choice I tried their auto-settings procedure which didn't work.
Just when I was starting to think this wasn't a good day I tried their manual settings page on their website...and guess what ? 2 minutes later I was on the web. Here's the procedure:

1 - From your main menu select Control Panel -> Connection -> Internet accounts -> New
2 - Enter the following information:
Account name : Bouygtel WAP GPRS
Connection type : GPRS
Address : mmsbouygtel.com

Then exit this menu and select Control panel -> WAP accounts -> New
Enter the following information:
Account name : Bouygtel WAP GPRS
Internet account : Bouygtel WAP GPRS (previously created)
Use a proxy : Yes
Address : 62.201.137.17
Port : 9201

So now I know it's not that hard ... and I'm not sure I will call them next time I encounter an issue, I might rely on their website instead.
